Common questions
Why does Diskloft ask me to choose my home folder?
The Mac App Store version runs in Apple’s App Sandbox, which only lets an app see folders you give it. Choose your home folder (the one with your name, containing Desktop, Documents and Library) and click Allow. Diskloft remembers it; you can revoke it in Settings → Access.
Some folders are missing or say “skipped”.
macOS protects Mail, Messages, Safari, the Trash and a few other folders. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access, turn on Diskloft, then scan again. Diskloft only measures these folders; it never removes mailboxes, messages or browser data.
Where do removed items go?
To the Trash, unless you choose “Delete permanently” in the confirmation sheet. You can put items back from the Trash in Finder until you empty it.
Is it safe to clear caches?
Caches are data apps can rebuild, so clearing them is safe, but an app may be a little slower the first time it rebuilds them. Quit apps before clearing their caches for the cleanest result. Diskloft empties the Caches folder itself but keeps the folder.
Will Diskloft make my Mac faster?
Diskloft frees disk space. A nearly full disk can slow macOS down, so making room can help, but Diskloft doesn’t claim to speed up your Mac otherwise.
Does Diskloft ever remove system files?
No. Diskloft only works inside your home folder and refuses system locations, your keychains, preferences, mailboxes and the main folders themselves (Documents, Desktop, Library…). Every path is checked again right before anything is removed.
How are duplicates detected?
Files with the same size are compared by their full contents with SHA-256. Diskloft keeps the oldest copy by default and never lets you select every copy of a file.
Reporting a problem?
Include your Mac model, macOS version and Diskloft version (shown in Settings → About). A screenshot helps a lot.
